Lemon Art Projects
Lemon Juice Watercolors
There are not many lemon-themed art projects out there, aside from actually drawing pictures of lemons! But I found one I like a lot!
You will need: Watercolor paints
Watercolor paper (Do not use regular thin paper for this particular project... it will rip!)
Paint brushes (you might want to get larger ones than the kind that come in kids' watercolor sets. I learned this because it took my kids fifty million years to paint with the small brushes, and some of them ran out of time or got bored before they were finished!)
Eyedroppers
Lemon juice
Cups
First, have kids paint their watercolor paper. Ask them to pain the whole paper, and try not to leave any white spots!
Once this task is finished, you can either let the paintings dry, or blot them with paper towels to get them as dry as possible or at least remove all the extra water that tends to accumulate when little kids use water colors.
Next, give each child a cup with a little bit of lemon juice in it, and an eyedropper. Kids can suck the lemon juice up, and drop it onto their painting. They might like to pick up their painting with both hands and move it around to let the lemon juice roll around on their paper.
Let the paintings dry completely. As the lemon juice dries, it will leave faded lines and spots where it dripped.
At this point, you can either leave the paintings as is, or give the kids black markers to trace around the faded areas and try to make pictures out of them.
I sent my kids' paintings home with them and forgot to take pictures, but I can show you an example from the website where I originally found the idea!
Products I Used For This Project
Invisible Ink Drawing
Heres another fun project that is also sort of a science project!
You will need: Lemon juice
Paint brushes (thin ones will be fine this time) or Q-tips
White paper (computer paper is fine)
An iron or blow dryer
First, let your kids use the paint brushes or Q-tips to draw designs on the paper. Remind them not to soak their paper (which they will try to do, since they can't really see what they are drawing.)
Let the lemon juice dry completely.
Now, heat the paper up with a blow dryer or iron. (If you use an iron, place the paper on the board and place a towel over it, and iron the towel. If you iron directly on the paper, it could burn!)
The lemon juice stain should turn brown, revealing the secret image!
If you're in a sciency mood, you can teach the kids about why this worked. Instead of outright telling them, I like to have them come up with some theories, and then use Google to research the answers together! Here is a link to get you started.
