Ocean And Beach Sensory Experience

For the kids I work with, sensory experiences are very important. I was trying to think of a great sensory experience that would go with the ocean and beach theme. Sand was the obvious choice... but giving the kids regular sand to play with seemed a little bit too ordinary. My next thought was the type of sand you can buy in stores, called Moon Sand, which looks like sand but can be molded like playdough. But it comes in very small containers, and is kind of expensive if you want to fill a whole box with it!

I did some research and found a way to make my own "sand" that would be extremely soft, moldable, and smell great. The recipe is unbelievably easy!

         Are you ready for it?

All you need is two ingredients... Flour, and baby oil!

Using the ratio of 8 cups of flour to 1 cup of baby oil, mix the ingredients together. At first it will seem like nothing is really happening. Just keep mixing. After a while, you will see the flour starting to clump together.

Now comes the most fun part. To mix it the rest of the way and give it the best consistency, knead it with your hands. You will love how soft it feels!

The baby oil gives the flour a very light brown color, similar to the color of beach sand.

I added some sea shells that I bought at the dollar store, some cheap buckets and shovels, and some small plastic sea creatures. The kids were delighted and spent hours playing in this area!
